Track 0400: THE EQUALISER (Bullock) 3:59 (GOLLY & THE WOGS) (21st December 1980)
John Hodgson – bass guitar, lead vocals, Martin Alderdyce – guitar, backing vocals, Dave Palfreeman – drums
Recorded: The Boat, Stockton (live performance) stereo cassette recorder, 2 remote microphones
John Lennon was murdered on the 8th December, and it was a huge shock, I was a big Beatles fan and things would never be the same again. I have memories of visiting The Boat during this period, having a Lennon tribute night where Stephen Thomas sang his songs, and the night was ruined by some invading skinheads.
The Gynaecologists played a gig there in December, with me and the pick up band that backed Stan all dressed in white doctors coats.
There was also another side project, I took to the stage with Marty, Dave Palfreeman and assorted guest vocalists as Golly & The Wogs. I am not proud of the name, it is politically incorrect and rightly so, but at that time these things didn't seem to matter so much.
I am not sure how it came about, I think it was Dimmer who had booked the gig, and we got on stage at a moments notice because of a band cancelling.
What happened that night was one of the most satisfying musical experiences of my life. Everything we tried seemed to work. It was shoddy, loose, but utterly magnificent, at least from my perspective.
I had rarely played bass guitar, even in rehearsal, so to take the stage and lead a band through a set that we had never played before playing bass and singing at the same time still surprises me to this day.
The first selection from the gig is a reggae jam loosely based around a Dillinger tune, although there are elements of “So Lonely” by The Police in the mix.
Whoever was manning the mixing desk deserves praise as they drenched the vocals in repeat echo and added to the magic in an unexpected way.
