Track 0356: THE RED PULLOVER (Hodgson/Wells) 3:48 (THE GYNAECOLOGISTS) (31st January 1980)
Musicians: John Hodgson – pianos, bass guitar, rhythm programming, chorus vocals, Stan Wells – lead vocals
Recorded: Impulse Studios, Wallsend (16 track) Produced by The Gynaecologists and Mick Sweeney
In January 1979, before Blitzkrieg Bop split, old Purity chum Michael Charlton introduced me to Stan Wells, a Billingham-based teacher who wrote poetry. He also produced a regular poetry magazine called The Chair. It was all pretty low key, but he had a Gestetner printing machine, and I was looking for a way to produce a local music fanzine, following on from a successful one that Bop had produced called “Gabba Gabba Hey”, which had ran to four issues.
We soon became friends and produced two issues of “Teesside Smells”. We also began collaborating musically when I suggested I put music to his poetry, in the style of John Cooper Clarke.
I had started thinking of getting into producing other bands and even starting my own record label, and luckily I was asked by a local band called Tick Tick to produce a recording session at Impulse Studios in Newcastle. I arranged for Stan to travel with me to the session, with the hope that there would be a little time left at the end of the day for us to record a couple of his poems put to music.
After recording no fewer than six tracks for Tick Tick (which were all released on a mini-LP called “The Immortalization Of Tick Tick”) we managed to squeeze in two songs in 90 minutes, on the first I played piano, bass guitar and drum machine, as well as adding some dodgy vocals on the chorus, the second song “The Offence” was a simpler affair with just piano and drums, but both seemed to work well, and they were eventually released on my own Teesbeat Records in April 1981.
