Track 0308: SUCCESS (Savage) 4:19 (BASCZAX) (22nd May 1979)
Musicians: John Hodgson – Yamaha SY1 synthesizer, Alan Savage – guitar, lead vocals, Mick Todd – bass guitar, backing vocals, Jeff Fogarty – saxophone, Alan Cornforth – drums
Recorded: Teessider Studios, Stockton – 2 x reel-to-reel tape recorders + 12 channel Canary mixer (produced by Alan Cornforth)
Basczax liked playing The Teessider, a small pub by the river Tees in Stockton. Regular gigs in Teesside were few and far between, but the landlord of the Teessider had bands on seemingly every night, and we had a residency on a Friday that saw us play 27 straight Fridays and 38 gigs in total. It became a second home, as we were allowed to rehearse in a large upstairs room, and as we couldn't really afford studio time, Alan brought out his reel-to-reel combo and Heathkit mixer and we set about making decent “studio” quality recordings of our full set.
The acoustics in the room, which had bare floorboards, were ideal, and as Alan had a lot of practise with his recording equipment with Bop, by the time we got to doing the Basczax material, the sound was way beyond our expectations.
The recordings took place sporadically over several months early in 1979 with a view to releasing a self-produced cassette, which we titled “Terminal Madness”.
Because I don't have precise recording dates for these sessions I have dated them on the day that Alan compiled them into a full set of songs.
