Track 0254: CAPTAIN COOK (Hodgson) 3:10 (JOHN HODGSON) 2nd June 1978)
Musicians: John Hodgson – guitars, lead vocals, backing vocals
Recorded: Roseberry Studios (site 1) 2 track reel-to-reel tape recorder
The eagerly awaited national UK tour supporting Slaughter & The Dogs and Eater commenced with a gig at Newport Stowaways in Wales on the 26th April and all seemed fine.
The band had prepared well and were playing the best music of their careers, and were hoping that the publicity generated from the tour would finally push them to success.
John was so confident of this that he resigned from his steady job at Parson & Croslands Steel Stockholders in Middlesbrough where he was a telephone sales executive.
Sadly for Bop, the tour began to unravel pretty quickly. There were over 30 dates planned but after only seven dates Slaughter & The Dogs disintegrated and the tour fell apart with huge arguments between bands, managers and promoters about money, a lot of which appeared to have gone down the plughole, or to be more exact, the back pockets of some of the participants, but not the poor support band.
The full story of the tour can be read in my book about the band “A Hard Road To Nowhere”, but the immediate aftermath of the failed enterprise meant that the band were back home, in debt, and I was also jobless.
It proved too much for Ray, who announced his departure from the band in the middle of May.
It was time for the band to take stock, and indeed to consider its future.
As a distraction I decided to enter a songwriting competition launched by BBC Radio Cleveland to mark the 200th anniversary of Captain Cook's third voyage in 1778.
I played it safe and constructed a gentle song with a folky feel and what I thought was a clever lyric.
I didn't win the competition, mainly because I missed the closing date for entries and nobody ever heard it.
