Track 0220: (YOU'RE LIKE A) UFO (Hodgson) 2:36 (BLITZKRIEG BOP) (16th October 1977)
Musicians: John Hodgson – lead vocals, Ray Radford – guitar, Mick Hylton – bass guitar, Alan Cornforth – drums
Recorded: Whinney Banks Youth Club (rehearsal) stereo cassette recorder, 2 remote microphones
So it was all change, shortly after the Newcastle Poly gig we had to start looking for a new guitarist. Mick and I were keen to ask Ray Radford, the guitarist from John's old band Erection, but Alan was keen to cast our net wider, so we advertised the the NME for a new guitarist. No one came forward so we invited Ray to a rehearsal at Whinney Banks. It was clear that he was going to work, and we didn't have a lot of time to prepare as we had a gig at The Rock Garden supporting Australian punk band The Saints on the 24th October.
I took the opportunity of the short gap between guitarists to write some new material, and one of the stronger songs was “UFO” which was earmarked for our next single.
We all learnt it together during Ray's audition, and by the end of the night we managed to capture a decent version, one which showcased Ray's lead guitar skills.
This was a new avenue for the band to explore, it would mean less dependence on my synth work when it came to lead lines and solos.
The Saints gig probably came a little early, and Ray wasn't really ready, the tape of the gig did not record well enough to feature here, and even then his performance was rusty.
