Track 0217: BUGGER OFF (Hodgson) 1:22 (BLITZKRIEG BOP) (7th October 1977)
Musicians: John Hodgson – lead vocals, Ann Hodgson – guitar, Mick Hylton – bass guitar, backing vocals, Alan Cornforth – drums, backing vocals
Recorded: Newcastle Polytechnic, Newcastle (live performance) BBC Uher mono cassette recorder, 1 x remote microphone.
Bop were playing bigger gigs, including The Aycliffe Pop Festival, and a gig at the Ace Of Clubs in Leeds, where the band were heckled, partly because we were doing cover versions, and also because we were from Middlesbrough. Ann in particular hated it, enough to decide to leave the band. This came as a great shock, but before she announced her departure the band played one last gig with this line-up, at Newcastle Poly supporting The Radio Stars.
Things went wrong from the start, with some of the bands equipment going missing before the gig, and a stage invasion by local band Speed who played an unannounced impromptu set right after Bop had left the stage.
After a shaky start the band won the audience round, and Ann's final gig eventually ended on a high. This version of “Bugger Off”, which I dedicated to the National Front, and the next two tracks are from this gig.
