Track 0163: LET'S GO (Hodgson/Blackwell/Hylton) 3:34 (BLITZKRIEG BOP) (25th May 1977)
Musicians: John Hodgson – lead vocals, Dimmer Blackwell – lead guitar, Ann Hodgson – rhythm guitar, Mick Hylton – bass guitar, Alan Cornforth – drums
Recorded: The Barn, Norton (room 2) 2 x reel-to-reel tape recorders (7 ½ ips) + Heathkit mixer (produced by Alan Cornforth)
It was now after 10pm and two songs were “in the can”, however, we all agreed that “Bugger Off” was too short for the b-side, getting desperate, Mick put forward a plodding two-note bass riff with some idea for adding a parody of Scott MacKenzie's “San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)”.
I had a beer mat in my pocket on which I had jotted down a lyric the previous week entitled “Discos And Friscos” which I completed in a couple of minutes.
Dimmer threw in a few ideas and after a couple of attempts we had a backing track down.
In order to create the right atmosphere, I had the barn cleared except for Alan and delivered the lead vocal in a sneering accent that was quite different to anything I had done previously.
We were so pleased with the results that “Let's Go” was immediately promoted to the a-side with the two others filling the b-side.
I couldn't have realised at the time that this song, and this version in particular, would define my musical legacy for decades to come, with the original vinyl artefact changing hands for close to £300 a copy, some £50 more than the cost of making the entire pressing of 500 copies in 1977.
This was the song that changed it for us, it opened doors, and became our “anthem”.
I am convinced that if we had been given time to think about it, rather than writing and recording it within an hour, we would have sped it up or altered it to sound like all our other songs, and the moment of magic would have passed.
The band didn't waste any time and travelled up to Mortonsound Recording Services in Newcastle to deliver the master tape and started the six week wait until the delivery of the records.
