Track 0149: HANGING AROUND (Greenfield/Burnel/Cornwell/Black) 4:13 (BLITZKRIEG BOP) (1st May 1977)
Musicians: John Hodgson – lead vocals, electric organ, synthesizer, Dimmer Blackwell – lead guitar, backing vocals, Ann Hodgson – rhythm guitar, backing vocals, Mick Hylton – bass guitar, Alan Cornforth – drums, backing vocals
Recorded: The Speedway Hotel, Middlesbrough (live performance) reel-to-reel tape recorder + Heathkit mixer
A lot of changes to report for this track. Firstly, the band added a second guitarist, Ann Hodgson (no relation to me), to fill out the sound. As she couldn't really play solos, Dimmer continued to play lead when required, and Ann stuck to a solid rhythm.
The band also advertised again for a lead singer, and actually for a couple days added Colin Bilton to the line-up, an old skool “rock” singer with long curly hair, several years older than the rest of the band. He was in for one rehearsal and attended a Speedway gig, and despite being introduced from the stage as the bands new singer, he was out again days later after we came to our senses and realised that he wouldn't fit in with our growing punk image.
I have again credited this track to Bop, but we were still taking the stage as Chubb.
The dual approach to music, and the confusion it generated, was again demonstrated by the fact that we spent a whole evening learning “Child In Time” by Deep Purple, and on another night learn half a dozen punk songs.
On the 1st May the band took the stage as a 5-piece for the first time, still playing two sets. The second set was now all punk/new wave, excepting “Caroline” that still hung around like a bad smell.
The first half were all standard rock tunes, except the final song which was when Ann made her debut with the band, playing this great song from The Stranglers debut album.
Another thing Ann brought to the band (apart from some much needed glamour) was a decent backing voice, heard stridently here.
