Track 0145: DO THE STRAND (Ferry) 3:35 (ADAMANTA CHUBB) (2nd April 1977)
Musicians: John Hodgson – electric organ, lead vocals, Dimmer Blackwell – guitar, backing vocals, Mick Hylton – bass guitar, Alan Cornforth – drums
Recorded: Grangefield Community Centre, Stockton (live performance) stereo cassette recorder
So, after a couple of months of rehearsals, abandoned recording sessions, auditions and intense band meetings, we finally reach the debut live performance of Chubb mk.2, despite the fact that the bands direction of travel was definitely to punk central, they were far from arriving.
For the handful of gigs we had lined up at this point, we decided to do two sets, the vast majority of which were standard rock fare, mixing cover versions, both familiar and fresh, with original material, most of which were not punk.
The first song of the new live era was this Roxy Music tune, just recently learnt in rehearsal. We also played “AC (Rock And Roll Band)”, “Hatred Lost...Love Won”, “The Old Man” and even a hoary old Rock and Roll medley stolen note for note from “Uriah Heep Live”!
The punk (ish) material was saved until the end, when I reappeared snarling in dark glasses (in a punk stylee), to race through “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue” (The Ramones), “Bugger Off”, “So It Goes” (Nick Lowe), and, in desperation, “Caroline” by Status Quo.
The musicianship in the band, helped by a solid bass guitar from Mick, made us sound better than ever, but still very far from perfect.
