Track 0116: START AFRESH (Hall/Hughes) 3:27 (ERECTION) (7th December 1976)
Musicians: John Hodgson – synthesizer, electric organ, backing vocals, Eddie Hall – bass guitar, Ray Radford – guitars, Jed Duffy – drums, backing vocals, Dave Hughes – lead vocals
Recorded: Tiffany's Nightclub, Middlesbrough (upstairs rehearsal space) 2 x reel-to-reel tape recorders (7 ½ ips) + Heathkit mixer (produced by Alan Cornforth)
Into December 1976 and the band are still playing live on a regular basis, but I was keen to try and get Erection to record some original material properly, and as a professional studio was out of our price range I arranged for my old band mate from Adamanta Chubb to come and record a session using his basic multi-track set up.
We only had two viable songs of our own, “Start Afresh” and my very own “Weekend Lovers”, we also started work on a third, a cover of “Hollywood Hot”, but didn't get further than the backing track.
You may notice that Yusef does not appear on this studio session. A few days earlier there was a huge argument within the band over something or nothing, and he had walked out of the band. He did return shortly afterwards but missed out on the bands sole recording session.
Sadly the master tapes have long been mislaid, and the only copy I had in the archive was of poor quality, with a lot of drop out (loss off signal) throughout.
I have cleaned them up as much as I can and that is what you hear in this set.
