Track 0107: POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES (Hodgson/Hall/Hughes) 5:18 (ERECTION) (7th October 1976)
Musicians: John Hodgson – synthesizer, electric organ, Ray Radford – guitar, Dave Hughes – lead vocals, Eddie Hall – bass guitar, Jed Duffy – drums, Yusef Nimar – congas, percussion, Steve White – trumpet, Colin Hudson – saxophone
Recorded: Tiffany's Night Club, Middlesbrough (upstairs rehearsal space) stereo cassette recorder
The Band resumed gigging with a new line-up on the 25th September 1976 at The Carlton Club, Hartlepool, adding Dave Hughes on vocals and a horn section who were never more than semi-detached members.
Two days before my 21st birthday I taped a rehearsal at a derelict bowling alley above Tiffany's night club, where we played regularly, and part of our reward was the use of the empty space upstairs.
Erection were not that interested in doing their own material as the club audiences wanted to hear songs they were familiar with, we were little more than a live jukebox.
But both Dave Hughes and myself were keen on trying our own stuff, and “Pocketful Of Miracles” was one we tried out at rehearsal a number of times. This is about the best version in the archive.
During October I was becoming aware of a new musical movement called punk rock. I was an avid reader of the four music magazines dominant at the time, Sounds, NME, Melody Maker and Record Mirror, and all of them were covering this new craze, so I was inspired to go out and buy the first Ramones LP, their “Blitzkrieg Bop” single, and “Anarchy In The UK” by The Sex Pistols, all of these blew me away.
At the time I was listening to a lot of jazz rock artists like Al Di Meola and Stanley Clarke, as well as prog bands such as PFM and Greenslade, with more mainstream acts like Roxy Music, David Bowie and Elton John also getting a lot of turntable action.
Punk rock would become a big part of my life, but not for a few more months.
