TRACK 0104: TRUE TO FORM (Hodgson) 7:41 (JOHN HODGSON) (p.May 1976)
Musicians: John Hodgson – synthesizer
Recorded: Roseberry Studios (site 1) stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder (7 1/2ips)
Back home after being ejected from the barn by Dimmer's dad, the bands future was in doubt. After playing a solitary gig at The Electric Onion in Stockton, the three piece line-up really had little prospect of progress. The Onion gig was a private party for Alan's brother David, but getting gigs on our own terms was proving impossible.
I had me keyboards set up in the front room, and this lengthy synth work out is pretty tedious but does demonstrate some of the sounds I could get from my SY1.
In May 1976 I was offered an audition through my old Purity band mate Michael Charlton for a soul/funk band called Contrast.
Amazingly I passed the audition and within a few days I was gigging with them, making my debut at Whinny Banks Youth Club on the 27th May.
By the time of this first gig the band had re-christened themselves Erection.
The style of music was totally different to what I was used to, but as it was a seven piece multi-cultural band I could blend in and not be the centre of attention.
The main man was the sax player Steve Brown and vocalist Dee Dee, who were the showmen of the group, which sometimes involved fire eating and a snake charming act.
Sadly, although the band played 37 gigs in a little over three months, no recordings have survived in the archive.
At the end of August 1976 there was a huge break-up in the band when it was discovered that Steve and Dee Dee were stealing money from the petty cash, we were playing mainly Social Clubs and night clubs in the North East of England and making some decent money, but we never saw any of it.
So, we threw them both out and while we organised replacements I had my gear back home again and I took the opportunity to record a few solo tunes.
