Track 0089: BLACK NIGHT (Gillan/Paice/Lord/Blackmore/Glover) 3:25 (ADAMANTA CHUBB) (p.January 1976)
Musicians: John Hodgson – synthesizers, electric organ, Dimmer Blackwell – guitar, Alan Cornforth – drums, lead vocals
Recorded: The Barn, Norton (room 1) 2 x reel-to-reel tape recorders (7 ½ ips) + Heathkit mixer (produced by Alan Cornforth)
I took the plunge in mid-January and splashed out on a Yamaha SY1 synthesizer, it cost £400 from Hamilton's Music Shop in Middlesbrough, but once the interest to the loan was added, I eventually paid over £600 for it.
In the late 1980's when I was a bit skint, I made the mistake of selling it at a car boot sale for £30, not long after, with the rise of hip hop and electro, the prices for vintage synths went through the roof and nowadays I could probably get my original payment of £600 back.
As far as recording goes, we were on a roll, Alan had all the levels right and as we could leave the instruments and equipment in place 24/7, it took not time at all to turn up and start recording.
We decided to do a selection of cover versions and the first one was this single from Deep Purple. As we didn't have a bass player, I used the bass setting on the synthesizer.
THINGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: The bass synth and Dimmer's guitar are hopelessly out of tune throughout. This should have been spotted and re-done, especially as Alan was something of a perfectionist in everything he did, but it was missed. Just before the guitar and organ solos, a short keyboard “trill” kicks in. This is not an overdub, but John playing the bass setting very high.
