Track 0087: FLY AWAY (Hodgson) 3:25 (ADAMANTA CHUBB) (7th January 1976)
Musicians: John Hodgson – lead vocals, electric organ, Dimmer Blackwell – guitar, backing vocals, Alan Cornforth – drums, backing vocals
Recorded: The Barn, Norton (room 1) 2 x reel-to-reel tape recorders (7 ½ ips) + Heathkit mixer (produced by Alan Cornforth)
I dug deep into the past to resurrect this old Purity song, featured earlier (#0003), it was a new arrangement with a vocal chorus and solo sections that had us playing the riff from “Pinball Wizard”. At the time of recording I was knocked out by the results. Alan used his ring modulator to “treat” the organ Eno-style to give it an other-worldly sound, and the addition of a chorus made things even better.
THINGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: On the chorus, I played Amin but Dimmer played Amaj, it wasn't until years later that we noticed the mistake.
