Track 0074: THE KNIFE (Genesis) 6:48 (ADAMANTA CHUBB) (p.September 1975)
Musicians: John Hodgson – lead vocals, electric organ, electric piano, Dimmer Blackwell – guitar, backing vocals, Kevin McMaster – bass guitar, backing vocals, Alan Cornforth – drums
Recorded: The Barn, Norton (room 1) stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder (7 ½ ips)
As mentioned before, we were all massive fans of Genesis, but the thought of actually playing one of their songs seemed fanciful as they often involved quite intricate and skilful playing.
So we made a massive effort to learn “The Knife”, and eventually we felt confident enough to try and record a version. There was an instrumental passage in the Genesis version that was beyond us, so we got round that by inserting another instrumental passage that we could play from one of their other songs “Suppers Ready”.
This song is the first to feature a newly acquired electric piano that I had bought second hand for about £30 – it was Fender Rhodes soundalike that was past its best, and it tended to crackle and pop as you played it.
We were extremely pleased with our effort, and its a song that occurs again later.
