Track 0065: THE OLD MAN (LONG JAM) (Hodgson/Blackwell/Keen) 36:07 (ADAMANTA CHUBB) (mid-1975)
Musicians: John Hodgson – electric organ, lead vocals, Dimmer Blackwell – guitar, Martin Keen - drums
Recorded: The Barn, Norton (room 1) stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder (7 ½ ips)
I thought long and hard whether to include this lengthy jam session, but in the end the sheer vastness of its patience-testing noise persuaded me to leave it in.
For some reason both Kevin McMaster and Alan Cornforth were not present, so it wasn't meant to be a full band practise, instead we just have Dimmer, myself, and a lad called Martin Keen, who may have been in an early incarnation of Chubb before I joined.
He contributes faint drums to what was a light-hearted run through one of the bands favourite songs “The Old Man”, written by me but given joint credit it here due to the improvisational nature of the performance.
The normal length of the song is around the seven minute mark, here, once the initial arrangement has been dealt with, the song develops into a wall of noise jam with Dimmer and myself trading solos and riffs for what seems like a lifetime. Magic.
