Track 0063: THE HAIRLESS NEPTUNE [1] (Hodgson) 2:38 (JOHN HODGSON) (mid-1975)
Musicians: John Hodgson – piano, lead vocals, Dimmer Blackwell – acoustic guitar
Recorded: Braemar Road Studios – mono cassette recorder
During the summer of 1975 I was house-sitting at my sisters when I invited Dimmer over for a writing/recording session. It was a sultry day so we had all the windows open whilst we worked through some new material, most of which were new songs I had written out with lyrics and chords. For this song I had changed the subject matter, away from boy/girl troubles to more oblique impressionistic lyrics, and the mention of “battles” demonstrated I had started to think of themes that the band might be more familiar with, as Genesis were favourites of us all, we couldn't help but be influenced by them.
THINGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: I felt the song wasn't really working, so towards the end I abruptly stopped playing and scrunched up the lyric sheet in frustration, Dimmer then attempts to calm me down and play the riff of “I Want You” by The Beatles, I then say “It's been recording” revealing I didn't realise we were putting it down on tape.
