Track 0061: CARNAGE (Hodgson) 2:27 (ADAMANTA CHUBB) (13th April 1975)
Musicians: John Hodgson – electric organ, Dimmer Blackwell – bass guitar, Kevin McMaster – vocals, Stephen Sharratt – guitar, Alan Cornforth - drums
Recorded: St. Joseph's Church Hall Youth Club, Norton (live performance)
stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder (7 ½ ips)
After the gig in February I commenced intensive rehearsals at “The Barn”, which was what I named the rehearsal space at Dimmer's family farm. There were actually three different barns over the years that were used for rehearsing and recording, and these will be identified as “rooms 1 to 3” in these notes.
There was another gig at St. Joseph's that I also passed on, but finally on the 13th April 1975 I made my live debut at the third St. Joseph's gig.
Musically, the band were pretty raw, Alan being the best player despite having only started drumming about a year previously. Dimmer was enthusiastic on the bass, but had the habit of straying from the key of the song. Stephen was an OK guitarist but struggled with playing solos. Kevin had a lusty voice, but was not good at finding the right notes.
So, I fitted in well, being a pretty basic keyboard player, although I was learning fast, and knew quite a lot of chords.
I set up at the side of the stage, and had to plug into Stephen's guitar amp as I had not yet bought my own. I beefed up the puny organ sound by routing it through a wah wah pedal, and this effect can be heard on “Carnage”, a repetitive four chord instrumental (albeit with Kevin adding some “aahs” along the way) I had written for the band. This performance is actually the soundcheck so there was no audience applause at the end, although that couldn't be guaranteed anyway!
THINGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: The song fades in at the start as the tape reel was damaged.
