Track 0032: I'M WRITING THIS SONG (Hodgson/Pragnell) 2:28 (JOHN HODGSON) (mid-1973)
Musicians: John Hodgson – lead vocals, tambourine, Goff Pragnell – acoustic guitar
Recorded: Braemar Studios, mono cassette recorder
Goff Pragnell was a close friend of my brother-in-law, Charles. It was at one of the many all-night parties held at my sister's house that this was recorded. At 3:30am, with the rest of the party animals slumbering in a drunken stupor around our feet, Goff and I recorded two takes of this up tempo pop song.
This is the first song in the set that is credited to me rather than Purity, and marks the point when Michael started to lose interest in the band, whilst my passion for writing and recording became, if anything, more intense.
I supplied the lyrics and the melody, and Goff, being a “proper” guitar player, took no time in constructing a chord sequence that would fit with the melody.
Take 2 is presented here, being the better version. Sadly, Goff committed suicide in the 1990's.
