Track 0009: THE LAST TRIP (Hodgson/Charlton) 3:14 (PURITY) (c.September 1972)
Musicians: John Hodgson – lead vocals, piano, drums, guitar, effects, muttering, Michael Charlton – vocals, piano, drums, guitar, dampened guitar, effects, muttering
Recorded: Langley Studios (room 1) adapted mono cassette recorder (with overdubs)
A slightly more complicated history to this song, due to the fact that I decided to be Phil Spector for the day, (no, I didn't shoot a woman in the face)
Even in these very early days I was frustrated that we couldn't do anything other than press record and capture our “live” performances, I was eager to experiment with overdubbing, and I developed a technique where I stuck a small piece of newspaper over the erase head of the tape recorder, so when I pressed record for a second and third time I could add new sounds without removing the original sounds.
I did this at least four times in the second half of the song to create a cacophony that was meant to create the sound of a “trip” of a drug addict.
The track was re-equalised in 1984 and digitally transferred on the 16th November 1995 and in April 1996 it was treated further utilising an Alesis Microverb 3 Digital Reverb.
THINGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: The reverb comes in at 1:12 at the same time the “multi-track” sequence kicks in. There are some infantile stream-of-consciousness gibberish during this section that is unashamedly politically incorrect.
