Track 0008: SEA OF RAIN (Hodgson/Charlton) 3:10 (PURITY) (c.August 1972)
Musicians: John Hodgson – piano, Michael Charlton – vocals
Recorded: Langley Studios (room 1) mono cassette recorder
Arguably the best song from the band in 1972, it features a proper verse/chorus structure, and an introduction and coda, complete with poignant lyrics that almost tell a story.
Michael even hits a sweet major 7th on the chorus vocal, although neither of us were aware of it at the time.
I was so pleased with the lyrics that I sent them to a chap called Herbert F. Taylor who advertised in the classified ads in Melody Maker, offering to put lyrics to music with a view to approaching record companies.
It was clearly a con, and the money we sent Mr. Taylor probably went into his back pocket minus the cost of the stamp needed to send us an A4 of sheet music with our lyrics written over a generic piece of music.
It cost Michael and I the equivalent of two weeks wages and was the first time (but not the last) that I was ripped off by the music biz.
