Track 0007: FUNKY LOVE (Hodgson/Charlton) 1:55 (PURITY) (c.August 1972)
Musicians: John Hodgson – drums, backing vocals, Michael Charlton – lead vocals, piano, Eddie Coulson – guitar, backing vocals.
Recorded: Langley Studios (room 1) mono cassette recorder
The bands attempt at writing a funk/soul tune, featuring part-time band member Eddie Coulson.
It originally featured on Purity's second “album” that we titled “Expressions/Second Time Round”. Michael was keen to display the diverse musical tastes of the band, and the initial idea was for Michael to be musical director for side one, and for me to direct side two.
Michael called his side “Expressions” and mine was called “Second Time Round”. This approach was quickly abandoned and “Funky Love” is about the only song to bear Michael's influence as regards style.
THINGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: Eddie Coulson's chief contribution is a manic shriek of “Yeah baby” towards the end.
