Track 0005: WHAT ABOUT THE WORKERS? (Hodgson) 2:02 (PURITY) (c.August 1972)
Musicians: John Hodgson – guitar, lead vocals
Recorded: Roseberry Studios (site 1, room 1) mono cassette recorder
This is essentially a solo performance that I recorded at home but it was still included on the first Purity cassette (that I called “Unchanging”)
It is built around a hackneyed country-tinged riff and is a lame attempt at social commentary.
THINGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: At about 1:22 I “drop in” the line when I sing “Those donkeys in the sky...”
In professional studios you can insert a replacement piece of music or vocal quite easily, but it is much harder with a basic mono cassette recorder. On the original recording there are several cracking sounds caused by pressing the record and stop buttons in order to insert the new line, but once it was transferred to digital most of this has been removed.
