Track 0003: FLY AWAY (Hodgson/Charlton) 3:42 (PURITY) (c.August 1972)
Musicians: John Hodgson – piano, Michael Charlton – lead vocals, drums.
Recorded: Langley Studios (room 1), mono cassette recorder
“Fly Away” became the first song that transcends the Purity era and turns up another couple of times in this set (track #0087 & track #0143)
The song writing was showing signs of development even at this early stage. It has a rather pedestrian opening melody that was not repeated, a verse/chorus structure (despite the chorus not having lyrics), and a (slightly overlong) instrumental break in the middle.
“Fly Away” also sees the recording debut of a piano, conveniently situated in Michael's front room. There is another version recorded a couple of months later featuring part-time Purity member and school-chum Eddie Coulson, but this is the superior version.
THNGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: The sudden ending of the song was due to Michael's grandmother coming in to see who was making all the noise. Purity's recording sessions were frequently interrupted by her, she was oblivious to the consequences of her marching in on a live recording.
