Track 0002: WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME? (Hodgson/Charlton) 1:24 (PURITY)
(c.August 1972)
Musicians: John Hodgson – drums, Michael Charlton – guitar, lead vocals
Recorded: Langley Studios (room 1) mono cassette recorder
Recorded straight after “Lonely”, probably at the same session, “Why Did You Leave Me?” is another up-tempo sing-a-long pop song. It consists of an 8 bar chorus repeated throughout, without any variation. Lyrically it revolves around the rather banal: “Why did you leave me/Why did you go/Where did you wander/That I wanna know”
THINGS TO LISTEN OUT FOR: At one point Michael fluffs the words, singing “You were on my knees” instead of “You were on your knees”. Later in the song the “cymbal” that I had constructed using a Lucozade bottle and the lid from a copper coal scuttle, collapses in a noisy heap.
